Biography
Tom’s work as a newspaper and magazine photojournalist has been nominated for Pulitzer Prizes in breaking news photography, feature photography and explanatory reporting during his career at The Seattle Times. Tom is currently an independent photographer, editor and artist based in Seattle. His work has also been recognized with multiple honors from World Press Photo, Pictures of the Year International, Best of Photojournalism, The Associated Press, Society of Newspaper Design, the United Nations Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, International Conservation Photography Awards, CENTER Santa Fe and others. The Burke Museum of Natural History and Cuture will exhibit images from his Duwamish River project, April 5 - July 8, 2012. "Choosing Hope: Reclaiming the Duwamish River" is his current documentary photo essay project, which has sponsorship from Blue Earth Alliance and FotoDocument. The Seattle Art Museum Gallery represents a selection of Tom’s work. Recent shows also include The Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture in Seattle, Photographic Center Northwest in Seattle, the Museum of Photgrahic Arts in San Diego, Earth Through a Lens exhibit in Palm Springs, California, and RayKo Photo Center in San Francisco. “The Last Oasis: Man, Beast and the Transcendent City Marsh,” is a book he photographed, wrote, designed and published. It explores the connections and competition between humans and the natural environment. “A Land of war, A Journey of the Heart" documents human rights in Burma, a project that resulted in a newspaper special section, a series of public presentations and a gallery exhibit that reaches audiences nationally, including the United Nations. "Losing Betsy" chronicles the effects of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease on its victims and their families, a work that spanned nine years and was published as a comprehensive series in The Seattle Times. Tom has also been recognized for his work as a reporter, picture editor and page designer. He judges photographic competitions, presents his work at public events and teaches workshops on subjects including photojournalism ethics and environmental journalism.
